Need help quitting...

topic posted Mon, June 19, 2006 - 4:23 AM by  ♥ Sarah
Gave up a few months ago for a month or two, and am now back to smoking.
My boyfriend encouraged me to give up so haven't told him that I have started again - resorting to sneaky cigarettes when out with him! (which i feel AWFUL about!) any advice on how to give up? I know I should, I know it is bad for me, but I think it is more habit, something to do at work, when bored, when "stressed" I reach for the packet...it's terrible, I wanna give up forever and am struggling to do so! HELP, HELP & RESCUE!!!

Everyone gives different advice, but here's my thoughts:

Nobody can quit alone. If you're boyfriend is as encouraging as you say, then you should be able to turn to him when things get tough, when you fall off the wagon, etc. You should tell him what's going on and not be sneaky.

There's no reason to feel awful about falling off the wagon, unless you don't get back on again. You will slip. You will have relapses. You will be tempted beyond belief. But the only shame is giving up.

The biggest advice is what they tell all addicts (of one sort or another). The best way to break a habit is to replace it with a good one. Differentiate between withdrawl stress and normal stress. When you notice withdrawl stress, or get that behaviorial urge, recongnize it and deal with it by doing your new habit. Over time, you'll learn to change your lifestyle from a smoking one to a non-smoking one.

I hope this helps. Stay strong. We're all in this together.

Thanks that is great! I know I should tell him, cos I hate lying too, but I just know how dissappointed he will be with me & that makes me feel bad!

There's no worse sin in a relationship than lying...his disappointment will pass, and just maybe his support will make your relationship stronger.

the only thing that worked for me was Zyban.
Iv'e tried patches and I started smoking a couple months later.
I tried lazer treatment what a joke!

Zyban get it from you doc. simple to use kills all the nic-fit cravings!

I quit 3 years ago and haven't been interested in a smoke since been around people smoking and it justs really stinks to me I find it very repulsive even when I was still taking Zyban I had no cravings.
I smoked a pack a day for 16 years inhailed.

oh so you know the only reason I quit was because I was sick of getting nic-fits because I couldnt afford the smokes anymore. Had nothing to do with wanting to quit or willpower I didn't need it!

Zyban worked I took it for the full 8 weeks
